The bigger Chinatown story
Real New Yorkers eat in Flushing — they know the difference.
Founded in 1645, Flushing became home to a Quaker community. The 1657 Flushing Remonstrance was an early American stand for religious freedom; in the years that followed, John Bowne became a key figure by sheltering Quaker worship and challenging his 1662 arrest. The 1694 Old Quaker Meeting House is New York City’s oldest house of worship still in use, and Declaration of Independence signer Francis Lewis once lived here. In the 1970s, early Taiwanese immigrants planted the roots of today’s Flushing Chinatown. Today, Chinatown shares the neighborhood with Koreatown and a thriving Indian community—a meeting place of peoples, cultures, and faiths that makes this one-of-a-kind Flushing.
Flushing is home to New York City’s largest Chinese community—a vibrant neighborhood shaped by generations of new arrivals.
Flushing’s community comes from regions across China, so Mandarin is widely spoken. Manhattan Chinatown was historically shaped by Cantonese-speaking immigrants.
Flushing serves flavors from across China: Tianjin jianbing, Shaanxi roujiamo, Guangdong rice rolls, Salty Fried Chicken, and more—from north to south. Manhattan Chinatown, by contrast, remains centered largely on Cantonese cuisine.
